Aircraft Deicing Fluid: A Necessary Evil and A Dirty Little Secret
Aircraft Deicing Fluid, also known as ADF, is a miracle of modern chemistry. Acting as a "freeze-point depressant," it can melt frost, snow, and inches of ice on contact. It helps airplanes keep one step ahead of the elements and saves lives. There are even types of ADF designed to stick to a taxiing aircraft, then sheer off during take off. A true miracle indeed!
However, there is another side to ADF that is not so good. It is an extremely poisonous chemical that can devastate the environment. ADF is made of any one of a few forms of glycol, otherwise known as anti-freeze. A few drops have been known to kill cats and dogs, and when it infiltrates the watershed, it consumes oxygen so voraciously that it kills plants and animals. The negative environmental effect is so severe that the EPA requires most airports to specially treat and reclaim the ADF runoff instead of letting it into the sewer system. What's worse is that many airports have no method of reclaiming spent ADF, which means it goes straight into the local watershed. ADF is a substance that, while necessary, is a problem for the environment as well as airport management, and is directly responsible for huge amounts of wasted money and resources every year.
